Board of Directors Spotlight: Shannon Miles

For the last four years, we’ve had the privilege of having Shannon Miles as a member of our Board of Directors.

During this time, Shannon brought a wealth of knowledge to our organization. As a wife to Brian, mother to Rainier and Harper, and founder of multiple businesses, she was able to bring holistic expertise to Untold. This spring, we celebrated her time as a Board member, and most recently as our Board Chair, as she transitions into the next focus of her career. As we look forward to this next season of our ministry, we celebrate the accomplishments that were made possible with the support of the Miles family. Learn more about Shannon’s involvement and what stirred her heart to Untold.

How did you originally get connected to Untold?

I first became aware of Untold in 2016 through a business colleague. After learning more about the organization’s holistic, Gospel-centered approach to caring for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, my heart was stirred. Over time, my family and I began giving and engaging more deeply with the mission.

What originally motivated you to join Untold’s board? In what capacity / how long did you serve?

In 2020, we decided to sponsor a center in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — intentionally choosing a highly Muslim community as a way to bring the hope of Christ to the region. Shortly after, in March 2020, I was invited to join the U.S. Board. I served as a traditional board member from 2020–2021, Vice Chair from 2021–2022, and had the privilege of serving as Chairman from 2022 to 2025. What most inspired me to step into leadership was Untold’s emphasis on family impact and the life-changing integration of spiritual, medical, emotional, and vocational care.

As you look back on your time on the board, what moments stand out as most meaningful?

One of the most powerful moments was visiting Tanzania in the summer of 2022 with my husband and our two children. Meeting clients and hearing them share how they had moved from darkness to light, from despair to hope, was unforgettable. I completely identify with that kind of transformation — the hope of Jesus and the care we once received from the local church were transformative in our own lives. I know firsthand that this is what Untold clients experience when they enter the program.

I concluded my tenure on the Board in March 2025. During my time on the Board we were able to update the Governance Policy Manual, Bylaws, and ensure the Board was trained on Policy Governance. Also during this time, we closed out the AIDS SAID campaign, expanded into South Africa, navigated leadership transitions, and enhanced programs along with support for staff. As I reflect back on my time on the Board, I’m amazed at all of the work the Board and the organization were able to accomplish together.

How have you seen the organization grow or change during your tenure?

Untold has grown in both depth and focus. It has become more strategic in its efforts, while staying rooted in its original mission. I’ve seen the organization expand its global footprint, strengthen leadership, and refine its approach to integrated care — all while continuing to center the hope of the Gospel.

How has being part of the board impacted you personally or professionally?
Personally, it’s deepened my faith and reminded me of the power of community and compassion. Professionally, it’s given me greater insight into the importance of solid Board governance and continual program evaluations. I’ve learned how powerful transformation can be when people are seen, heard, and supported holistically.

In my former role as co-Founder and co-CEO of BELAY, Inc., I navigated a move from CEO to co-Board Chair in 2020. I believe I was called to serve as the US Board Chair for Untold to support the inflection point the organization is experiencing as it continues to grow.

What hopes or dreams do you have for the future of Untold?

I dream of Untold expanding into even more underserved and unreached communities — bringing restoration, healing, and Gospel hope to individuals and families around the world. My hope is that more people catch the vision for bringing hope to those living with HIV/AIDS in more regions in Africa.

If you could leave one message with the Untold team or community, what would it be?

Asking for help can be the beginning of transformation. I’m committed to Untold’s work because I’ve experienced this truth myself. To the team: what you do matters deeply. Keep going. You are not just meeting needs — you are restoring dignity, offering hope, and changing legacies for generations.
