Stacked Tiles, Shared Stories: Mahjong Nights with Untold

Tiles were stacked, stories were shared, and community filled the room at Elevated Table in Atlanta last month as friends and supporters of Untold gathered for an evening of mahjong with purpose. The event brought together seasoned players and first-timers alike, united by a shared mission: equipping and embracing individuals across East and Southern Africa to live a life beyond AIDS.

Over lively games, guests had the chance to learn more about Untold's vision — where every person who walks through the doors of their local church can experience integrated care, healing, and the opportunity to step into their fullest potential. What made the evening special was how naturally a casual night of gameplay opened the door to deeper conversations about Untold's work and the real lives being transformed across Eastern and Southern Africa.

For Untold's Experience Coordinator, Abby Armstrong, the evening was a reflection of something much bigger than a night out. “What I loved most about this event is how it captured the heart of our work,” Abby says. “We believe that, more than medicine, therapy, or money, what unlocks the abundant life for our clients throughout East and South Africa is the power of community. Gathering women from all different walks of life to play a game, share their stories, and simply be together for the sake of being together is not just something we hope to do on a Thursday night in Buckhead; it’s what we pray is happening in every community where Untold works.”

The evening was brought to life in part through the generosity of Abbie Rappaport, a valued and longstanding Untold partner. Knowing that Mahjong is a beloved tradition among her closest friends, Abbie saw in the event a natural opportunity to weave together her personal and philanthropic worlds. She also took a moment during the evening to speak candidly about why Untold resonates so deeply with her.

“My husband and I were first introduced to Untold on our first night as Atlanta residents. We immediately fell in love with the holistic care model and loved that the care originated at the local church level,” Abbie says. “Seeing the wrap-around care that the Untold clients were receiving and the way Jesus was the lead story through the work sealed the deal; we knew we wanted to be a part of the story and were in for the long haul!”
